This map was originally created in 1660 by Johannes Vingboons, when New York was still called New Amsterdam. This copy is a reproduction made in 1916 by illustrator John Wolcott Adams and architect Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The map is one of the first ever made of New Amsterdam, when it was still a Dutch settlement. The illustration shows the extent of the city, located in southern Manhattan, and the large defensive fortification it had in the northern part (on the right side of the map).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665\u20131667), the settlement passed into the possession of the British Empire, and its name was changed from New Amsterdam to its current name, New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The map is also known as the Castello Plan. This is because the first original copy was found in Villa di Castello, a villa owned by the Medici family near Florence, Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
