This map, created by Thomas Jefferys, forms part of his posthumous work. The West India Atlas<\/em> (Atlas of Western India), originally published in 1775. This copy belongs to a reprint from 1788.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The map shows the Caribbean island of Dominica. This territory had been ceded by the French to the British in 1763, although the United Kingdom did not establish an official colony until 1805, so at the end of the 18th century, Dominica still did not have a formal government. This can be seen on the map with the few settlements it had, largely populated by Caribbean people who had arrived from other nearby islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The author depicts the island's mountainous terrain on the map using shadows, as well as the presence of numerous forests and rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
