This map, created by American cartographer Ruth Taylor White in 1935, depicts the Philippine archipelago in pictorial form to promote its tourism potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manila, the capital of the Philippines, was known at the beginning of the 20th century as the Pearl of the Orient and was a popular tourist destination. This is reflected on the map by a ship full of tourists approaching Manila alongside a US vessel. The islands of the archipelago are filled with characters through whom White seeks to represent Filipino customs. Some tourist attractions are also included, such as Magellan's tomb in Cebu and the rice terraces in Luzon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another very characteristic feature is how the cartographer also uses caricatures to indicate which countries and regions are located nearby in each direction. This can be seen with Japan to the north, China to the north-west, Siam and Singapore to the west, Borneo to the south-west, Australia to the south, and Guam to the east.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
