This map, created by James Churchman, was published in the United States alongside the book Rudiments of national knowledge<\/em> (Rudiments of National Knowledge) by Joseph Churchman in 1833.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book Rudiments of national knowledge<\/em> aimed to instil national sentiment in the younger population and immigrants who had recently arrived in the United States. It can be understood as part of the existing propaganda aimed at building a national identity, which was necessary in a state that had only been in existence for a few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The eagle map, which was published alongside the book, depicts the country's borders, with all the states that formed the union separated by red lines. An image of a bald eagle, the national symbol of the United States, is drawn over the entire territory. As Joseph Churchman explains on pages 244 to 247 of the book, this map seeks to awaken national pride while emphasising that cooperation between states was essential and that the future of the state would only be possible if the union acted as such.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
