This map by J. B. Elliott was published in 1861, during the American Civil War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The map is a satirical critique of the Anaconda Plan presented by General Winfield Scott to President Abraham Lincoln to wage war against the Confederates. In this plan, Scott sought to establish a strong defence in Washington and block the enemy economically, both by land and sea. This is represented on the map by a snake, which the map's title refers to as Scott's great snake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At present, it is difficult to determine to what extent the Anaconda Plan was effective in securing victory for the Northern Unionists. What is clear is that Scott failed to keep the promise of few casualties that he had made to Lincoln.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
