This map, created by Daniel Aparicio Pindado for the website El Orden Mundial in 2016, represents the different economic blocs that existed in Africa at that time.
The different colours represent the following organisations:
- Red: Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). In recent years, several members have been suspended from membership: Guinea (2021), Mali (2021), Burkina Faso (2022) and Mali (2023).
- GreenSouthern African Development Community (SADC).
- Blue: Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). Tunisia and Somalia joined the organisation in 2018.
- Yellow: East African Community (EAC). The Democratic Republic of Congo joined in 2022.
- Red LineTripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA). This was a proposed trade agreement between the SADC, COMESA and EAC organisations. This plan was rejected in favour of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which currently includes all countries on the African continent except Eritrea.
