This map, drawn up by the Mexican cartographer Antonio García Cubas, was originally published as part of the Geographical and Statistical Atlas of the United Mexican States in 1858. It is the first atlas of Mexico produced by a Mexican cartographer. This particular edition was published by Debray Sucesores in 1886.
The map shows the state of Veracruz, in eastern Mexico, with its most populous towns, main geographical features and administrative boundaries (shown in different colours). This elongated state borders the Gulf of Mexico to the east, Tamaulipas to the north, San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo and Puebla to the west, Oaxaca to the south-west, and Chiapas and Tabasco to the south-east.
The map includes two inset maps: one in the top right-hand corner showing details of the Coatzacoalcos River, the Bobos River and the Tecolucta Bar; and another in the bottom left-hand corner showing the port of Veracruz and the surrounding islands.
