This map, drawn up by the Mexican cartographer Antonio García Cubas, was originally published as part of the Geographical and Statistical Atlas of the United Mexican States in 1858. It is the first atlas of Mexico produced by a Mexican cartographer. This particular edition was published by Debray Sucesores in 1886.

The map shows the state of Tamaulipas, in north-eastern Mexico, with its most populous towns, main geographical features and administrative boundaries (shown in different colours). This state borders the United States to the north, Nuevo León to the west, San Luis Potosí to the south-west, Veracruz to the south and the Gulf of Mexico to the east.

In the centre-right of the map is an inset showing the Port of Tampico, the state’s main port, situated near the border with Veracruz.
