This map, drawn up by the Mexican cartographer Antonio García Cubas, was originally published as part of the Geographical and Statistical Atlas of the United Mexican States in 1858. It is the first atlas of Mexico produced by a Mexican cartographer. This particular edition was published by Debray Sucesores in 1886.
The map shows the state of Tabasco, in south-eastern Mexico, with its most populous towns, main geographical features and administrative boundaries (shown in different colours). This state bordered the Gulf of Mexico to the north, Campeche to the east, Guatemala to the south-east, Chiapas to the south and Veracruz to the west.
In the top left-hand corner, there is an inset showing the Puerto Frontera and the course of the River Grijalva as it flows into the sea.
