Map of the South Polar Regions (1965)

This map of the Antarctic was published in 1965 as part of the Československý vojenský atlas (Czechoslovak Military Atlas). The work was carried out by the Ministry of National Defence and the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences under the direction of Jan Klíma. Its contents are in Czech.

The Czechoslovak Military Atlas is one of the most ambitious mapping projects of the Cold War in Central Europe, with more than 300 people working directly on the collection of information and the design of the maps.

This particular map uses an azimuthal equidistant projection to depict the south polar regions, with a particular focus on Antarctica. The authors chose to depict Antarctica's mountainous areas in brown, while opting for white for all areas where the ice cap did not allow a glimpse of the underlying relief. They also used continuous purple lines to delineate the extent of the ice cap, as well as dotted purple lines to show the boundary of the ice shelves.

The map also includes detailed information on the exploration of Antarctica. It includes the names by which the different explorers named the regions of the continent, such as Země Královny Maud (Queen Maud Land), Země M. Byrdové (Marie Byrd Land), Adélina Země (Adelie Land) or the Wilkesova Země (Wilkes Land). The inner part of Antarctica also shows the routes followed by the various exploration routes with red lines, as well as the position of scientific and exploration bases active at the time, with triangles and flags.
