This map, drawn by Luis Hoyos Salazar, was published in 1938 as part of the annual industrial supplement to The West Coast Leader, a newspaper for the British community in Lima.
The map shows the main commercial air routes that existed in Peru at that time, operated by five different airlines, each represented by a different route: Línea Aérea Nacional, Compañía de Aviación Faucett, Panagra, Cóndor Peruana de Aviación and Lufthansa. The map also includes the country’s railway network, as well as its river system.
1938 was an important year for Peruvian commercial aviation. Faucett, the country’s leading airline, took over Aerovías del Perú and consolidated its domestic network. Panagra, a joint venture between Pan American and W. R. Grace, had dominated the international west coast route since 1928. In 1938, Lufthansa also launched the Lima–Arequipa–La Paz route, through which the German company sought to extend its influence in South America. In this regard, the map also illustrates the struggle for influence between the Anglo-Saxons and the Germans, just one year before the outbreak of the Second World War.
