This map, published by Simeon Netchev for World History Encyclopedia in 2022, covers the French Revolutionary decade, from the outbreak of 1789 to the coup d'état of 18 Brumaire (9 November 1799) with which Napoleon Bonaparte dissolved the Directory and ushered in the Napoleonic period.

The map consolidates in one image a complex process: the internal upheavals in France, the territorial expansion of the Republic and the military campaigns against the European coalitions. The legend organises the period into several layers, among others:

• The extent of France in 1789 is outlined by a thick blue line.
• The epicentres of the Great Fear are marked with purple dots, and the area of propagation of the movement is marked with a striped pattern.
• Territories annexed by revolutionary France, such as the Duchy of Savoy and present-day Belgium, are shown in light purple.
• In light green are the sister republics (the satellite states of France), such as the Helvetic Republic, the Bavarian Republic or the Cisalpine Republic.
• Territories occupied by France, such as the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, are shown in dark green.
• The main battles are marked with their date and painted in blue when the victory was French and in red when the victory was for one of the coalitions.
