The division of China and East Asia (1910)

This map, created by Zachery Ammerman, shows the distribution of China and the rest of East Asia in 1910.

Following China's defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895), China lost its position as a regional power in East Asia to Japan. This sparked growing interest among European powers and Japan, beginning what is known as the Scramble for China or the Fight for China.

On the map, the author uses different colours to show the areas controlled by each power in different regions, as well as their areas of influence, with dotted lines:

  • In yellow, the Russian Empire.
  • In purple, the Empire of Japan.
  • In red, the British Empire.
  • In purple, France.
  • In black, Germany.

Tensions between the various powers persisted over the following decades and were a significant factor in the development of the Second World War.
