Neighbourhoods of the Pecheros Census (1528)

This map, published by the Spanish National Statistics Institute in 2008, shows the neighbourhoods used in the 1528 Census of Pecheros.

The Census of Pecheros is a count of the towns and residents that existed in the Crown of Castile, which was carried out upon the arrival of Charles I. It is named after the pecheros, which was the name given to all residents who were obliged to provide their services to the king. The vecindarios were the names given to the various censuses carried out by the Spanish monarchy during the Modern Age.

The map shows in dark brown the 36 intendencies (former provinces) into which the Crown of Castile was divided at the beginning of the 16th century. These intendencies evolved into the former provinces that appear in Tomás López's atlas. The territories that, despite belonging to the Crown of Castile, had their own charters, such as the Basque Country, the Kingdom of Navarre and the newly incorporated Kingdom of Granada, are shown in brown. The territories of the Crown of Aragon are shown in light brown.
