Detailed map of the Holy Roman Empire (13th century)

This map, published by Alphathon in 2016 for Wikimedia Commons, shows the territorial complexity of the Holy Roman Empire during the rule of the Hohenstaufen dynasty.

The Hohenstaufen dynasty had six emperors of the empire between 1138 and 1254, a period in which it reached its maximum territorial extent. On the map, this corresponds to the territory within the maroon line. The different colours represent the different members, which included various kingdoms, duchies, principalities, archbishoprics, princely bishoprics, counties and margraviates.

The Alphathon map is a vectorised, modern adaptation of the map of the Holy Roman Empire that appears in the 1886 historical atlas published by Richard Andree with the work of Johann Gustav Droysen.
