This map, published by Arciom Antanovič in 2022, shows the most widely used web browsers in 2012 and 2022, according to data provided by StatCounter.
At the top is a world map showing the most popular web browsers in each country around the world in April 2012, when there was still fierce competition between Internet Explorer (light blue), Mozilla Firefox (yellow), Google Chrome (green) and Opera (red). At the bottom, the situation ten years later, with Google Chrome (green) dominating globally, with a few exceptions such as Greenland, where Safari (dark grey) is used, and Equatorial Guinea, where Microsoft Edge (dark blue) is used.
Internet Explorer was bundled with the Windows operating system in the late 1990s and, as a result, came to account for 90 % of the market at the height of its dominance. It was finally discontinued in June 2022. Its successor, Microsoft Edge, launched in 2015 using the same engine as Chrome, had barely managed to make inroads into the market seven years later, with a 4 % share of the global market.
