This map, published by WWF International in 2011, serves as an educational resource on the Coral Triangle, the most biodiverse marine region on the planet.
The map shows the extent of the Coral Triangle, covering six million square kilometres across parts of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, East Timor and the Solomon Islands. There are two layers on the map. On the one hand, there is the scientific area of the Coral Triangle (in light blue), defined according to marine biodiversity criteria. On the other hand, there is the implementation area of the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (orange line), an agreement to which the six countries have been party since 2009.
The Coral Triangle is home to more than 500 species of reef-building coral, accounting for 76 % of the world’s coral species. In addition, there are also 2,200 species of reef fish and six of the world’s seven species of sea turtle.
