This map is a collaborative effort by several Wikimedia Commons users, who regularly update the high-speed rail network in Europe. This version is from April 2023.
In the illustration, the train lines are painted according to their maximum speed:
- Purple: Speeds between 300 and 320 km/h
- Red: Speeds between 270 and 300 km/h
- Orange: Speeds between 240 and 270 km/h
- Yellow: Speeds between 200 and 240 km/h
- Grey: Speeds below 200 km/h
- Dotted green: tracks under construction.
This legend shows how high-speed infrastructure has taken root in Western Europe, particularly in Spain, France and Germany, which are among the five countries in the world with the most kilometres of high-speed rail: Spain is second with 4,327 kilometres, France third with 3,977 kilometres, and Germany fourth with 3,516 kilometres. China ranks first with 42,000 kilometres, and Japan ranks fifth with 2,727 kilometres.
