This plan of La Coruña was published by Pedro Martín Cermeño in 1774. It includes not only a plan of La Coruña at that time, but also a project for the improvement of the city.
In the mid-18th century, La Coruña was an important port for Spain, but there were considerations that the city had grown in a disorderly manner on the isthmus, occupying areas that had previously formed part of the defensive system. It was precisely in this context that Pedro Martín Cermeño decided to publish this map and propose a project to improve the military capacity of the enclave.
Proposals for improvements included rebuilding bastions and walls, concentrating efforts on the Fronte de Terra, which was the defensive structure that set the limit to the city on the isthmus to the southwest of the city (at the top of the map). In addition, the author also proposed the construction of a new stretch of muraña in front of Orzán Beach, thus defending the city from possible access through the inlet.
Much of this project could not be carried out due to lack of funding, although some improvements were made to the existing defensive structures. The important Fronte de Terra remained standing until 1869, when it was demolished as part of the first expansion of the city and in order to unify the city with the suburbs outside the city walls.
