This infographic was published by Jo Wood in 2024 as part of the initiative #30DayMapChallenge.
In it, you can see twelve cartographic projections in which the globe approaches a polyhedron that subsequently develops to give this curious type of result based on polygons.
The projections shown in the infographic are as follows (from left to right and top to bottom):
- Lee's tetrahedron
- Gringorten's Quincunx
- Berghaus Star
- Cubic
- Cahill's butterfly
- HEALPix
- Snyder's icosahedron
- Rhombic
- Deltoid
- Fuller's AirOcean
- Waterman butterfly
- Dodecahedral.
To facilitate interpretation of the map in the different projections, the author has chosen to mark the boxes with different colours depending on the density of countries at each point. This makes it easier to compare the different projections with each other.
You can find more information about the initiative here. #30DayMapChallenge in what I wrote in the newsletter.
